Leader-In-Training Program

Overview of the Program
Our Leader in Training program is designed as an ideal transition between being a camper and becoming a staff member. The program emphasizes the development of Christian and outdoor leadership skills in an adventure learning context. It offers a balance of formal training, mentoring and practical hands on experience.

We highly encourage any young person who has a desire to develop and use their leadership skills in a Christian ministry to consider this unique training opportunity. It will provide essential skills that can be used in any aspect of life, and specific training for those aspiring to be on Medeba staff. At the end of the program successful participants will receive a certificate of completion which will be a valuable addition to a resume. When hiring Medeba summer staff, preference is given to successful graduates of Medeba’s LIT program.

This is a two-part program that is usually taken over two summers but may be taken in one summer, if requirements are met.

LIT Participants and Their Relationship With God
Leader In Training participants are expected to be developing their relationship with God and have a desire to live by the standards in the Bible.

LIT Participants and Their Lifestyle at Medeba
Behaviour
Our standard for all behaviour is taken from the Bible - the word of God. LITs are expected to cooperate with others and respect staff members. Any kind of abuse or abusive language or words is not acceptable. (e.g. Put-downs are unacceptable.)
Media
We ask that TVs, VCRs, DVD players and video gaming equipment not be brought to Medeba. Personal music players with headphones and cell phones are permitted but are only to be used during personal time off. The LIT staff must approve all media before LITs view or listen to it unless it is produced under a Christian label. If anyone is bothered by volume, it must be turned down.
Relationships
Do not be alone with a person of the opposite sex, without being in full view of others.
Alcohol and Tobacco
LITs are not to consume alcohol or smoke.
Clothing
LITs must wear appropriate clothing. Revealing clothing is considered inappropriate. Undergarments must be worn and they must not be seen at any time.

Curfew
All LITs have a curfew of 11:00 p.m. in their room, and 11:15 lights out, unless permission is given. Occasionally earlier curfews may be given if staff detect extra sleep is needed.

Parents Visiting - Other than our Open House there is no official visitor's day at Medeba. If parents wish to visit LITs or take them off the property for a break arrangements can be made with the LIT Director.

Other Issues
Community Life - LIT is limited to a maximum of 18 participants. Separate accommodation for boys and girls is provided in the "Hub" and a staff member also lives with them. The "Hub" also has a large meeting room between the boys' and girls' accommodations.
Lost and Found - All lost and found items are displayed multiple times during the week for the owners to claim. All unclaimed items are washed and stored until the end of September, at which time we donate them to a local charity.

LIT Schedules for Parents - A day by day calendar of LIT events is available for parents to see what is planned for LIT. Parents may pick these up on registration day or request one to be sent to them.

Bicycles - Medeba is not responsible for LIT bikes. Bikes are not to be left near entrances to buildings and specifically not to be on porch of office, porch of chalet, or porch beside the kitchen. Helmets must be worn at all times when riding.

Complimentary Fleece for LIT 1 Participants - Participants in the LIT 1 Program receive an exclusive embroidered fleece jacket. This complimentary jacket sets apart LIT participants at Medeba.

Medeba Memory CD ROM - Each month we produce a CD complete with a viewer which includes hundreds of digital pictures from the month. We encourage all LITs who have digital cameras to download their photos for this CD giving us a large assortment of pictures. Cost is $11.00 (taxes included).

Spending Money While at Medeba - Spending money is needed for several reasons while at Medeba. We recommend that $120 would be sufficient for the month plus funds if you wish any souvenirs and clothing. See the breakdown below.

1. Camp Store / Tuck Shop - We call our camp store the Tuck Shop. The camp store offers snacks, souvenirs and quality Medeba clothing. All camp store money is deposited into a debit account for the LITs so they don't have to handle cash until it is needed. Any remaining money at the end of the stay is returned. LITs should not keep money in their cabin.

2. Laundry - LITs have the opportunity to do their laundry each week at the local laundromat. The cost for a load of laundry is around $5.00. Participants should bring their own detergent and supplies.

3. 1 Meal at a fast food restaurant - This is to eat out on the way back from the LIT 1 canoe trip. $10 is recommended.

Leaving the Property - LITs may not leave the property without permission and must be accompanied by a staff member. If LIT parents wish to visit or take LITs off property they may do so with permission from the LIT Director.

Privacy Policy - For information on Medeba's Privacy Policy it is outlined at www.medeba.com/privacypolicy.html.

Cancellation Policy - In the event that a LIT participant cancels, the fee, less the deposit is refundable, up to two weeks prior to the program. After then, the entire fee becomes non-refundable, unless written explanation from a physician is received. Medeba reserves the right to dismiss someone for behaviour problems at the discretion of the Director. No refund will be made for dismissals due to disciplinary action, late arrivals or early departures.
